

Southern Texas PGA Member and friend Elroy Marti, Jr. passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014. Elroy Marti was a native Houstonian coming from a golf family. His father, Elroy Marti Sr., played the PGA Tour with the likes of Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret, Bryon Nelson and many more greats of that golfing era. His cousin Fred Marti played the tour from 1964 to 1980.
Elroy attended the University of Houston on a golf scholarship from 1972 to 1976. In June of 1976, he attended the PGA Tour Qualifying School and earned one of 25 tour cards to play the PGA Tour. After losing his card after one year on tour, he played on the Australian/New Zealand Tour for a few months. In 1978, he went back to Q-School and earned his tour card again for a second time. In 1979-1980, he played on the European Tour for 8 weeks. After returning to the states, he joined his father as the assistant professional at Hermann Park Golf Course. Then after the death of his father in 1986, Elroy took over the Head Professional duties until 1989. In August of 1989, he opened the first location of the Marti Golf Center. He also helped in designing and served as the Head Professional of Hackberry Golf Club with Betty T. Johnston from 1997 to 2004. In 2004, Elroy opened the second location of the Marti Golf Center.
Elroy was preceded in death by his parents, Emma Jean Mancuso Marti and Elroy Edward Marti, Sr. He is survived by his wife Brenda Marti, daughter, Sara Marti; son, Chad Marti; grandchildren, Katelyn Marti and Harrison Marti, sisters; Chris Kieley, Karen Young, Sherry McDougald, and Kathy Thomas; brothers, Scott Marti and Robert Marti.
A Funeral Mass will be held in the Chapel at St. John Vianney Catholic Church at 10:30 am Thursday, January 23, 2014. The church is located at 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail Houston, TX 77079 off Memorial Dr. between Eldridge and Dairy Ashford. There will be a reception following the mass at the church's dining hall.
