

Elsie G. Smith, daughter, sister, cousin, wife, aunt, friend, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, of St Dominic Village in Houston passed away on June 30, 2014 and now rests in the presence of our Lord. Elsie was born in Laredo, Texas on August 27 1924, the second child of Rudolph Carl and Beatrice Dovalina Gissing. She survived her siblings: Josephine Johanna Gissing, Rudolph Carl Gissing Jr., Mabel May Thurston, and Thelma Gladys Meeks. Her father, an engineer for the Texas and Mexican Railroad, moved the family to Corpus Christi, TX in the early 1940s. She wed Lester W. Smith of Corpus Christi, Texas on September 5, 1945 who preceded her in death on January 5, 2000 after 53 years of happy marriage. She leaves to cherish her memory: son, Lester Rudolph Smith and wife, Melody Lynn, of Vancouver, Washington; son, Rodney Lee Smith and wife, Regan Kim, of Canyon Lake, Texas; grandchildren: Lori Heckman of Woodland, Washington, Misti Weaver of La Center, Washington, and Matt Smith of Woodland, Washington; great-grandchildren: Marilyn and Mason Weaver, and Matthew, Michael, and Macy Heckman. Elsie was a founding member of Saint John of the Cross Catholic Church in New Caney, Texas. Her rosary will be held in the Carmelite Monastery Chapel, 1100 Parthenon Pl, New Caney, Texas Friday, July 11, 2012 at 7:00 PM. The funeral mass will be held the following day at 10:00 AM in the Monastery Chapel, with internment to follow in Brookside Memorial Park. She requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Discalced Carmelite Sisters, 1100 Parthenon Pl, New Caney, Texas 77357-3276.
