He was born on August 30, 1931 in Parma, Ohio to William and Helen (Hofman) Ahrens. He was the elder brother to Charles.
Erwin served in the United States Air Force where he developed aviation as a hobby. He later attended The University of Texas to major in Economics where he met and married, Patricia Fitzgerald. They were married for 50 years and raised three children.
Erwin was a businessman and entrepreneur as the owner of The Kolache Shoppe, a chain of kolache bakeries in Houston, Texas. He purchased a farm in the Yoakum area and developed a love for animals, bluebonnets and his peach orchard. He later retired to his farm.
Erwin was preceded in death by his brother, his parents, and his wife. He is survived by his son, Robert Ahrens and grandson Daniel Ahrens as well as two daughters, Janet and husband Joseph Frankovic, Caroline and husband Wally Simpson and two grandchildren Ryan Simpson and Chelsea Simpson.
A private celebration of life memorial service was conducted at his favorite place, the farm, in the presence of family and friends.
