A resident of Houston for 57 years, he is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Maria Dominguez Acosta, two children, Dr. Fernando (“Gordo”) Acosta, Jr. (wife Melissa W. Acosta, PhD) and Dr. Alisa Ana Acosta (husband Dr. Philip Rascoe), grandchildren Fernando Silvestre Acosta, Antonio Thomas Acosta, Marisol Alexis Rascoe, Liliana Alisa Rascoe, and Olivia Ana Rascoe, brother, Jose Luis Acosta (wife Mary Acosta) of Delaware, and many loving nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by father Silvestre Acosta, mother Dolores Labrado Acosta, brother Silvestre Acosta, sisters Amelia Camacho (husband Eduardo Camacho) and Mary Tarango (husband Luis Tarango).
He was born in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, and lived in Parral, Mexico, before the family moved to El Paso, Texas, where he lived for several years before entering the United States Air Force. He served his country for eight years, splitting time between Japan and Washington, D.C. After his service, he returned to El Paso and attended UTEP, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and met the love of his life.
He worked for Geophysical Service Inc. and Fairfield Industries as a geophysical analyst. The last couple of years before his retirement, he worked as a liaison between Fairfield and Pemex, enjoying many trips to Mexico.
He was a devout Catholic all his life and very active at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church. He is known for his quick wit and ability to do math quickly in his head. He was an avid reader. He loved music, especially mariachi music, and loved to sing and dance (even though he was not very good at either). He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He also loved our little bird, Anita, and she loved him, too. They would spend many hours watching television together. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
A special thanks to Nancy Suarez (caregiver) and all the staff at the Heritage of Meyerland and Heritage of Eldridge for caring for him in the final years of his life. A special thanks to Mark Bearden for the extraordinary support in the final moments of Fernando’s life.
