Francisco Bernal III, known affectionately as Frank, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023, in Richmond, Texas, at the age of 80. He was born on May 5, 1943, in San Diego, Texas, and his life was one filled with adventure, dedication, and love.
Frank was a man of honor and commitment from an early age. After graduating from San Diego High School, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the Army in 1961. He displayed remarkable dedication and ambition during his military service, taking a brief hiatus to pursue higher education at Baylor College of Medicine, where he earned a degree as a Physician’s Assistant. After completing his studies, he rejoined the Army and attended Officer school in Tacoma, Washington. Frank's service took him to various parts of the world, including Vietnam, Korea, Hawaii, Alaska, and Germany. He was proud to have his family with him during many of these assignments.
Frank's remarkable military career spanned over 21 years, and he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 2nd Class (CW2) in 1984. His work at the Michael E. Debakey VA Medical Center, particularly in Orthopedics, showcased his dedication to helping others and serving his fellow veterans.
He was an avid learner and a true lover of knowledge. Frank's curiosity and thirst for growth were evident through his interest in self-help books, history, and the Royal Family. He had an abundance of fascinating stories from his military experiences, and he cherished sharing them with others.
Family was of utmost importance to Frank, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments. He came from a long line of military service, and he carried on that legacy with dedication and honor. Unfortunately, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Francisco Bernal IV, whose memory he carried with him throughout his life.
Frank leaves behind his loving wife, Cecilia Velasquez-Bernal, who was his steadfast companion and support throughout their journey together. He will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Vickie Bernal and Laura Erickson Bernal, as well as his five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who were a source of immense joy and pride for him. He is also survived by two brothers, a baby sister, and numerous cousins.
Francisco Bernal III was a man of integrity, courage, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of service, knowledge, and cherished memories. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the life he lived and the impact he made on those around him. Frank's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
