Born on September 2, 1947, Frank brought joy and laughter to everyone fortunate enough to know him. Whether it was through his quick wit, his unwavering support of those he loved, or his ability to find laughter in the everyday. Frank served his country in the United States Navy and following that he began working for Southern Pacific Railroad and later Union Pacific Railroad. He worked for the railroad for 35 years and was able to retire in 2007 and enjoy many years of travel and relaxation.
Frank had a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and had a knack for making everyday feel like an adventure. He had a lifelong love of polka music-always ready to tap his feet to a good beat-and he especially cherished traveling around Texas, camera in hand, capturing the charm of small towns, scenic highways, and quirky roadside stops. He joyfully shared those photos on Facebook, connecting with friends and family through his love of the open road.
Frank also had a love of fishing. He was a proud member of the Early Morning Sickos, rising by 4:00am every Thursday-Sunday to listen to the Mickey Eastman Fishing Show. Those early morning hours were filled with camaraderie, laughter, and a love for all things fishing.
Many will fondly remember Frank’s iconic 1972 Two-Toned Blue Ford Pick-up Truck-a family legend in its own right. The truck carried the Furlow family on countless vacations, racking up more miles than anyone could count. The sight of all 5 Furlows piling out of that truck turned plenty of heads and created memories full of laughter and love.
Frank was the beloved husband of Deborah JoAnn (Urban) Furlow, his wife of 51 years, who stood by his side with strength, grace, and unwavering devotion. In his final months, Debbie cared for him with extraordinary tenderness and faith, truly embodying the heart of a Godly wife. The family is grateful for the compassionate care of Elysian Hospice, and especially for sweet LaLa, whose joyful spirit brought peace and comfort during that time.
Frank was a proud and loving father to Tara Hartjen and her husband Travis; Audrey Vernon and her husband Chris; and Frank Furlow III. He was PawPaw to his cherished grandchildren: Makayla Furlow; Jenna, Molly, Jake, and Luke Hartjen; and Braden and Georgia Vernon. He loved his family deeply and lived for moments spent surrounded by their laughter, stories, and love.
Frank is also survived by a large and loving extended family—nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends—who will forever treasure his jokes, his stories, and the fun times shared over the years.
Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Helen Furlow, Sr. and his brothers Johnny Furlow and Bobby Smith.
Though Frank has left this earthly life, his legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed, but he will always be remembered with a smile.
