Frank Kavanagh Smith, 88, passed away on Tuesday August 17, 2010. Known as "Smitty" by family and friends, he was a native of Omaha, Nebraska, where he received a B.S. from Creighton University. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII as a radar specialist. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1948 with his wife, the late Dorothy Marie, Smitty began his 35+ year career with DuPont, as a chemist and a salesman. One of the highlights of his career was testing paint samples on the upper levels of the Golden Gate Bridge. Smitty had a wide variety of interests, including art, the outdoors, science, space exploration, and music, especially American jazz. After retirement from DuPont, he taught himself how to cut and facet stones and gems, many of which were showcased in sterling silver jewelry of his own design. Smitty was especially proud of his 52-year marriage to Dorothy, and of his work as a cancer survivor volunteer with M. D. Anderson hospital. He leaves behind two sons, a daughter, seven grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. His family wishes to thank the community of the Village on the Park in Friendswood, Texas for their support, as well as the A-Med hospice and Tuscany Village staff. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his name to: M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday August 21, 2010 at 3:00 PM in the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel, 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77079.
