Fred Lee Ashley desired to be with his beloved wife, Naomi Ashley, who preceded him in death on February 22, 2020, to continue their love story. On Friday morning, January 13, 2023, God joined them together again.
Fred Lee Ashley, 92 was born in Castleberry, Alabama, on December 25, 1930, to the late John Ashley and Angeline Tolbert. He was the fifth child of seven from this union. Fred was both his mother's birthday and Christmas gift, as they both shared the same special day of birth. He was raised to believe in Jesus Christ and knew God was the head of his life.
As a young man in the 1950's, Fred traveled westward on a quest for a better way of life, briefly leaving his childhood sweetheart, Naomi. He secured a job in Houston, Texas, at Tenn-Tex Alloy Company and returned to Brewton, Alabama, to marry Naomi on October 10, 1955. They began their lives together in Houston and were married for 64 years before her passing on February 22, 2020.
Fred was known as a trailblazer! He motivated and supported many of the Ashley and Stallworth families to migrate to Texas. It was his pride and joy to return to Alabama driving on Highway 31 to Sowell Road (4-way stop sign) in Brewton; and on Rt 1 (Walter Gross Lane) in Castleberry, blowing his car horn to let everyone know he was back in town. His families and friends always gave him a hometown welcome because Fred never forgot his roots!
Fred's work ethic was widely admired. He worked 25 years at Tenn-Tex with perfect attendance. He took pride in his home and had one of the most manicured lawns on Woodwick St. Family game nights, where everyone would gather and play card games (Tonk) were some of his fondest memories. He loved to fish, hunt, and listen to music, especially the Blues.
Fred is survived by his children, Freddy Charles, Larry Donell, Beverly Faye (David II) Fridie, Kerry Wayne and Freddie Renee Floyd; grandchildren, Termaine Ashley, Asia (Eduardo) Ayala, and Artricia Floyd; and one great grandson, Ade Ashley.
Ann Ashley Johnson (James) is Fred only surviving sibling. Two of his sisters preceded him in death: Emma Reed, and Cora Washington. All brothers preceded him in death: John Ashley (Martha), Roosevelt Ashley (Rosemary), and Charlie Ashley (Frances).
A Celebration of Life Service for Fred will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Texas 77039.
