Fred was born on September 7th, 1937, in Atascosa County, Texas to Alberto Flores and Florence Lozano Flores. He attended Poteet Junior High and graduated in 1955 from Burbank High School in San Antonio, Texas. After graduation, he entered the US Navy where he was deployed to the Pacific four times aboard the USS Bennington. He was extremely proud of his designation as a Shellback, signifying he crossed the equator while on official duty on April 24, 1957.
After his honorable discharge in 1959, he went to work at the Martinez Funeral Home in San Antonio, where he met Rosario Jimenez. They married in 1964, and welcomed their daughter, Deborah, a year later. The family soon moved to Houston, where Fred worked for Mira-Pak. While his marriage to Rosario did not last, they remained lifelong friends, with him lovingly becoming “Tio” to her children, Celeste and Vanessa.
Fred worked as an electrician with Mira-Pak, M&M Mars, and as an outside contractor living in Australia. With Mira-Pak he had the opportunity to travel the world and get to know the locals. He visited five of the seven continents that included China and Japan, South America, the Middle East, Canada, Central America, The Caribbean, and Europe. His travels took him to sights like the Great Wall of China and Christ the Redeemer in Brazil.
Fred’s greatest honor was his role as a father and as Gramps. He was a fabulous storyteller, entertaining friends and family alike with his tales from around the world. His passion project in retirement was archiving the Flores-Lozano family history for future generations and was able to enter his family into the Daughters of the Republic of Texas with his research. He enjoyed watching old westerns, attending classic car shows, and watching Houston Oilers and Houston Texans football.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Ernestine Zepeda, Gloria Rojas, and Elisa Garcia.
Those left to cherish memories of Fred are his daughter Deborah and son-in-law Daniel; his grandchildren Matthew (Hayat) and Nicole (friend Michael); numerous nieces and nephews; as well as extended family members and friends.
A service to celebrate Fred’s life will be in Poteet, Texas in the coming weeks followed by a private inurnment of his ashes at the family farm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the charity of your choice.
