Freddie Marie Holeman-Baker was born on September 5, 1927 in Dallas, Texas to the proud parents Truman and Lena Holeman. Truman and Lena named their beautiful baby girl after Lena’s beloved uncle Fred Wright. She was affectionately called “Big Freddie”. Freddie received her primary education in Sulphur Springs and Dallas, Texas.
In the 1950’s, Freddie moved to Houston, Texas. She worked as a successful barber and trailblazer – the first female barber to work in an all-male shop.
Freddie Marie married “the love of her life”, Herbert Baker on March 15, 1964. She and her husband were founders of Marie Baker’s Dressing Company and they later became one of the largest distributors of Shaklee products.
In 1967, Freddie and Herbert embraced the teachings of Baha’u’llah and became members of the Baha’i Faith. Feddie said “Mama’s prayers led me to God through Baha’u’llah and the Baha’i Faith. Thank you Mama for your prayers from the Abha Kingdom, (Spiritual name of Heaven)”.
Although Freddie was never blessed with children, she was a Mother, Godmother, Aunt, Sister, Friend, Mentor, and definitely a role model to many. She leaves behind many who loved her and rejoice in her life.
