Freddye Williams Hogan passed away on Saturday, the 15th of May 2010, following a long and difficult illness. Freddye was born on the 13th of May, 1938 in Shreveport, LA. Throughout her life she set standards for academic excellence, graduating as valedictorian of her high school class at Byrd High in Shreveport, and later as valedictorian of her class and a member of Phi Beta Kappa at LSU where she graduated in 1939.
It was at LSU where she met Al Hogan, the love of her life. Following a football game in the fall of 1938, Freddye and Al eloped to be married near Baton Rouge. They then traveled on to New Orleans for a two day honeymoon that would begin their marriage of sixty-five years.
Following graduation from LSU, Al and Freddye lived for a short time in Guntersville, Alabama where Al and his father were involved in construction projects for TVA. In 1940 they moved to Houston, TX where they spent the rest of their lives.
At the beginning of WW II, Freddye followed Al to numerous military assignments across the country including bases in Washington, D.C., Columbus, OH, and Leesville, LA. Although Freddye and Al returned to Houston after the war, Al was recalled to duty during the Korean War, during which time Freddye followed him to Camp Rucker in Dothan, AL and Fort Bragg in North Carolina. In 1953 they returned to Houston where they spent the rest of their lives.
Freddye was a leader in community activities in Houston, where she served as president of both the local Tri-Delta and Pan-Hellenic associations. Most importantly to her, she devoted those years following the War to raising, supporting and loving her two sons. In the most explicit way possible, she sacrificed her own unlimited abilities to nurture theirs.
Freddye is preceded in death by her husband, the late A.L. Hogan Jr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Williams; her brother, Bill Williams; and her grandson Keith Hogan. She is survived by her two sons, A. L. Hogan III and his wife, Judy, and Lee W. Hogan and his wife, Marnie; four grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express particular appreciation to Mr. Jose Cruz who cared for Freddye in such a remarkable way during the last eight years. They also want to acknowledge the exceptional care she received from the staff at The Hampton at Post Oak.
A private graveside service was conducted for Freddye on Wednesday, the 19, of May, at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions, in Freddye’s name, be directed to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 22013, Houston, TX, 77227-2013.
