Garland was born in Port Arthur, TX to Otis and Thelma Sonnier from Louisiana. He went to school at Thomas Jefferson High School and then Lamar University. He stated his favorite memory from childhood was riding his bike to Texaco refinery, and one day they let him in to see his Dad who was an electrician. He enjoyed visiting his Dad at work. Garland graduated from Lamar University in Engineering. He worked as an Electrical Engineer for many companies throughout his career. He was a veteran and served in the US Coast Guard. He met Elisa Sonnier in Port Arthur, TX where she was working as a nurse from the Philippines. They attended the same party and he says she was the most beautiful woman in the room. They soon married and created a family with two children. He loved jazz music, bowling, gardening, reading his Bible, and his children. He always made time for his children and sacrificed to ensure they were never in need. Garland fought as long as he could and is now no longer in pain. He is now our second guardian angel along with our mom. We miss him dearly and thank him for being such a great Dad.
Garland is preceded in death by his wife, Elisa Sonnier, and his mother and father, Otis, and Thelma Sonnier.
Garland is survived by his children, Shalimar, and Voltaire (Wife, Sonia) Sonnier, his brother Randy Sonnier, and his Grandchildren Genaveev and Elliot, who will all miss him dearly. He was loved by many as an always grateful and generous man.
The family of Garland wish to extend our sincere thanks to all the doctors at Kelsey-Seybold for all their help and care over the years and to Agape Residential for all your help and care during these last months.
