George married Jean Davis Kutzschbach “Pogo” in 1982. They were inseparable companions, world travelers and soulmates for over 42 years. Pogo was by his side at the end.
George was born in Bryan, Texas, on the 15th of March 1947, to William Ernst Kutzschbach and Ruth Davis Kutzschbach. He had one brother, William Ernst Kutzschbach, Jr.
After attending public schools in Bryan, George enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin, where he pledged the Phi Delta Phi fraternity, made lifelong friends, and became a devoted Texas Longhorns fan. George pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Texas law school, where he distinguished himself academically and served as an Associate Editor of the Texas Law Review. He graduated with a Juris Doctor degree with honors in 1972 and tied for the highest score on the Texas bar exam.
George joined the Houston law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP (now Norton Rose Fulbright, LLP), and specialized in complex oil and gas transactions. He became a partner in 1979. George retired from full-time practice and became ‘of counsel’ to his firm in 2010.
George was widely respected by his peers, colleagues and clients and received numerous professional accolades. He was named a Texas Super Lawyer, a Texas Top Rated Lawyer, and a Who’s Who lawyer in energy-related matters. He was listed among The Best Lawyers in America from 2007 through 2021, when he formally retired from Norton Rose Fulbright.
A passionate traveler, George spent much of his leisure time either “on the road” or planning his next trip. Introduced to travel by his parents at an early age, he meticulously organized frequent visits to the United Kingdom and Europe, where he and Pogo rented houses and immersed themselves in local cuisine, culture and adventures. An avid skier and outdoorsman, George passed on a passion for snow skiing to several of his nephews. He and Pogo shared a love for hiking and together they conquered many of the major long-distance treks around the world. George’s knowledge of history and travel was extensive. He and Pogo enjoyed serving as willing and gracious travel advisers and tour guides for friends and relatives who often joined them on their adventures.
Always generous and wise, George had a twinkle in his eye and a sly smile that radiated warmth, empathy, and goodwill. He was a connoisseur of good wine and good times. He was a “go to” guy for his family and friends, always ready with advice and encouragement in legal and personal matters. He was a loving, kind, and generous husband, brother, uncle, and companion. He cherished the time he spent with his nieces and nephews, his colleagues and friends in Texas and elsewhere, and his extended family in the Carolinas.
In addition to his wife Pogo, George is survived by his sisters-in-law Randon (Missy) Winborne (Brodie), Joslin Davis (Fred Harwell), Cameron Blanton and Marilyn Sexton; his brother-in-law Rick Davis (Able Rae); and numerous nieces and nephews.
George’s parents and brother preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law Dr. Courtland H. Davis, Jr. and mothers-in-law Marilyn B. Davis and Carrie C. Davis, as well as by his nephew William Kutzschbach and brothers-in-law M. Johnson Davis, Harrison D. Blanton, and Bobby O. Sexton.
