George graduated from Sam Houston Senior High School in 1960. It was there that he met his future wife, Dolores Kaye (Loocke) Ross. They were married on July 7, 1961 and enjoyed almost sixty-one years together.
George was a loving husband, father, PawKaw and friend. He treasured his family and delighted in all of their accomplishments. He valued education and always said that his greatest accomplishment was putting his three children and his niece through college.
George and his wife, Dolores, began George R Ross Construction Co., Inc. in 1967. It served Houston and the surrounding areas until January 2014, when they both retired. George was well respected for his honesty and his perfectionism in his work. He truly was an artist in woodworking and could make anything out of wood, including furniture, cabinets, toys, etc. A multitude of folks will treasure his works of art. Many of his clients became some of his best friends. He loved to hear clients say, after he had completed rebuilding a fire-damaged house, that their house was better than before the fire.
In recent years, he made and donated over 1,200 wooden toys to the Houston Down Syndrome Association and the Faulk Foundation, as well as a number of other organizations.
George was a long-time member of Houston’s First Baptist Church. George enjoyed his four Model A Fords and was a member of the Greater Houston Model A Restorers Club and the Piney Wood Model A Club. He also was past president and member of the Downtown Optimist Club. He was presented an Optimist Life Membership many years ago, for his dedication to the club. He developed many cherished friendships through these clubs. He also was awarded a Life-Time Membership of the Texas PTA, for his work in the schools.
George loved deer hunting and the time spent in the woods with his oldest son, George. He took pride in the good work that his daughter, Amy, does teaching children. He thought the planes couldn’t fly without his youngest son, Paul, controlling them. He was so very proud of the good fathers that his sons are and how they put family first in their lives.
George is survived by his cherished family: His wife, Dolores Kaye (Loocke) Ross, daughter, Amy Rebecca Ross, Son, Dr. George Ray Ross, Jr., his wife, Kathy and their daughters Dr. Dolores Lillian Ross and Joanna Morgan Ross; Son, Paul Kara Ross, his wife Shannon and their children, Kiera Skye Ross and Cullen Edward Ross; his two sisters, Sandra and husband, Bill Krismer and Marilyn Wright; his Sister-in-law Janice (Loocke) and husband, Jerry D. Dobbs.
George is also survived by three nephews and five nieces, as well as many cousins and friends. Among his many friends, he treasured time spent with Wilbur and Dorothy Scott, Gene and Evelyn Parrish, Bill and Arnita Hoekstra and Jim and Kathy Hartzog.
