Gloria Jean Pettaway

She was born on October 18, 1938, in Mansfield, Louisiana, to Leroy West and Lee Annie Perry. Gloria graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas.

In Houston, she met the love of her life, Hersey Pettaway, and the two were united in marriage on February 23, 1957. To this union, Vanessa and Cedric Pettaway were born.

Gloria dedicated 65 years to her career in cosmetology at Pettaway’s Beauty Salon, where she brought joy, confidence, and beauty to countless clients and friends. She had a lifelong passion for hairstyling, collecting antiques, dolls, and figurines, and caring for her koi fish in her cherished man-made pond.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy West and Lee Annie Perry, her beloved husband Hersey Pettaway, and her brother Curtis Giggles.

She is survived by her sisters Gloria Laverne Henderson (Audwin Connor) of Katy, Texas, and Marie Brinagh of Austin, Texas; brothers Robert Henderson of Houston, Texas, Tommy Henderson of Brookshire, Texas, James Henderson (Bernadette) of Houston, Texas, Billy Henderson of Houston, Texas, and Robert West of Mansfield, Louisiana.

Gloria’s legacy of love continues through her children, Vanessa Phipps (Donald Sr.) of Houston, Texas, and Cedric Pettaway Sr. (Alicia) of Huffman, Texas. Cathy Phillips (Ruben) of Houston, Texas. She will be dearly remembered by her grandchildren Donald Phipps Jr. (Sharon), Da’Rell Phipps Sr. (LaTerica), Christopher Pettaway (Courtney), Cedric Pettaway Jr. (Rochelle), and Trinae Pettaway, as well as her great-grandchildren Tiyarah Shine, Da’Rell Phipps Jr., Raelynn Phipps, Anayah and Amoree Montgomery, Kairo Bozant, Khalya Pettaway, Wesley Gee and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family of Gloria Pettaway would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all who offered prayers, visits, calls, flowers, cards, and kind words during this time of sorrow. Your love and support have been a great comfort to us. May God bless each of you.
