September 15, 1942 – February 5, 2014
Daughter of Dorothy Emma Bernos Granberry and Vernon Dennis Granberry. Lifelong resident of Houston, Texas. Beloved and loving wife of Kenneth Alvin Schmidt. Survived by daughter Alison Romano of Wimberley, Texas and daughter Jennifer Schmidt and Sunil Kothari of Houston, Texas and beloved sister Carol Thompson of Salado,Texas.
Jean loved animals and is also survived by her beloved cat Frankie and grandpets. She always encouraged and supported her daughters’ work with animal rescue organizations. Jean and Kenneth shared an especially close bond and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. While she struggled with pain and the debilitating effects of Multiple Sclerosis, she always had a smile on her face and found great comfort in music – ranging from classical to Texas folk. She and Kenneth could be found frequently attending concerts or volunteering at KPFT. She took great pleasure in the company of her family, especially the children whom she would take for rides on her scooter, always letting them drive.
Jean graduated with a degree in English and a teaching certificate from Saint Thomas University in Houston, the first in her family to do so. In her early years, she and Kenneth lead the Engaged Couples Program and the Confirmation Program at St. Rose of Lima Church.
