Wally grew up in Benavides, Texas, where his father had a ranch. He learned the hard work of ranching, tending to cattle, picking cotton, corn, and watermelon. He graduated from Benavides High School where he played basketball, and played the baritone in the marching band. He was Editor in Chief of his high school yearbook. While in college, he met and married Norma in 1956. Wally then received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at the University of Houston in 1959 and graduated at the top of his class. During the U of H Class of 2009 Commencement, Wally was blessed to be honored and recognized as a Golden Cougar where he walked the stage in cap and gown to celebrate 50 years of working in the pharmacy industry.
Wally and Norma owned and operated several pharmacies, including Lorraine Pharmacy, which was an old-time soda fountain pharmacy, and St. Joseph Pharmacy. Wally's greatest passions in life were his Catholic faith, family, Norma's cooking, his career as a pharmacist, and sports. Wally instilled in all his children and grandchildren the importance of education and a strong drive to pursue it. He loved all Houston sports teams, but his heart belonged to the Houston Cougars. He attended many Cotton Bowl and home games. Whenever the Cougars were playing on TV, Wally would be seen adorned in red from socks, shirts to a ball cap. In honor of Wally Casas’ memory, GO COOGS!
The family would like to thank Spring Cypress Senior Living for the care and compassion they showed our loved one during his final months.
In honor of our father who loved the Cougars, those who would like to pay tribute to him may wear U of H Cougar colors to the visitation and/or funeral service.
