

Harold Wallace Nelms, age 93, of Houston, Texas died peacefully on August 1, 2023, while surrounded by his children. He was born April 2, 1930, to Tom and Myrtle Nelms. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Doris Slaughter Nelms, a brother and two sisters. Harold is survived by son Harold E. Nelms and wife Judy of Littleton, Colorado; son Darrell Nelms of Houston; daughter Dianne Simmons of Atlanta, Georgia; grandson Erich Simmons, wife Jessica and great granddaughter Kaitlyn of Lynnwood, Washington. Harold is also survived by niece Susan and husband Tom Slocum; nephew Kenneth Boone and wife Brenda; many grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, and friends.
Harold graduated from Jeff Davis High School in Houston in 1948 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from the University of Houston in 1953. He married his high school sweetheart Doris Slaughter in 1951. Upon graduation from U of H, Harold worked briefly as a pharmacist for Dugan’s Drug and Walgreen’s before being recruited by the Upjohn Company, a pharmaceutical manufacturing and marketing company where he enjoyed a distinguished career retiring in 1990.
Harold was a devout Christian from an early age. He served as a deacon in several Baptist churches through the years. He and his wife Doris were longtime active members of Second Baptist Church in Houston. He served faithfully in the “Winning Walk” ministry at Second Baptist Church for approximately 39 years.
The family will receive friends at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home from 3-5 pm on Sunday, August 6, 2023. His graveside service will be private. A memorial service will be held at the Hankamer Chapel at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway, Houston, Texas 77057 on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 10:00 am, with a reception following in the Deacon's parlor.
