

TX. He was the second of three sons born to the union. He spent his early childhood throughout the North Texas area as his father was an AME minister who was assigned to various churches in the region.
In 1948, he moved to Houston and joined Payne Chapel AME Church, when his father was given charge.
He graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in January 1950. After graduation, he enlisted in the US
Marine Corps, stationed in Barstow, CA. Upon his discharge in 1952, he returned to Texas and enrolled at Paul Quinn College in Waco, graduating with a BS in Education in 1955. He later received his Master’s Degree in Education from Texas Southern University in 1971.
While at Paul Quinn College, he met Alice King and during their union, two daughters were born, Veronica Ann and Victoria Rene were born. On January 2, 1965, he married Jean E. Jones. To this union, two daughters were born; Millanee Yvonne and Kimberly Onette. He was also the father of Shannon LaWanda.
Harold’s teaching career began in August 1956 at Carver Elementary and Junior High School and the
following year transferred to Carver High School, where he established the organization for boys, The Royal Dukes. During his years as a teacher, he was in partnership with his long-time friends Emmett Curtis and T. J. Brooks as proprietors of Sir Lion’s Den that operated on Quitman Dr. After several years, he left Carver High and moved to Galena Park High School to become a counselor, working with Special Education students.
He retired from GPISD in 1990. After his retirement, he enjoyed viewing television, riding his bicycle with
friends and working crossword puzzles.
At Payne Chapel, he was a faithful member of the Mass Choir, Sons of Allen, Male Chorus. He was elected to the Trustee Board and was designated as a Trustee Emeritus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. RN Reed, Sr. and Rosetta Smith-Purvis; step-mother, Mary O. Reed; Alice M. Reed; brothers, Randolph Reed, Jr, Clifford Reed and Alroyce Fields; sisters, Carolyn Green, Beverly Green and Doris Holmes; and daughters, Shannon Fonteneaux-Reed and Victoria Reed.
Harold entered his eternal and peaceful rest on August 12, 2024. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Jean; daughters: Veronica Johnson of Ft. Worth, Millanee Reed and Kimberly Reed of Missouri City, TX; grandchildren: Brenshue’ Reed, Johnny Reed; Natasha Reed; Annise Reed, Timothy Strawther, Tomara Strawther (all of Ft. Worth, TX) and Ieshia Demas of Kingwood, TX; sisters: Eva Taylor of Grand Prairie, TX and Pearlie Green of Dallas, TX; 14 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
