Herman was born to Herman Drews, Sr. and Ella Drews on the 18th of July 1929. After graduating from San Jacinto High School, Herman served in the U.S. Air Force. He returned to Houston and embarked on a career in insurance and real estate that spanned 60 years. He was an active member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees, worked as an usher, and coached baseball. Herman loved sports, holding season tickets to the Oilers, Texans, Rockets and Aeros, but his greatest passion was his family. It was a rare occasion for him to miss a child or grandchild’s sporting event, play or recital.
Herman, or “Papoo,” as his grandchildren called him, is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dorothy Larson. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mickie Drews; his daughter, Sandra Drews Lucas and husband Richard P. Lucas of Houston; his son, Karl Drews and wife Ashley Logan Drews of Houston; grandchildren, Sarah Lucas of Exeter, England, Randall Lucas of Austin, Katherine Drews of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Amy Drews of Houston; and sister Gertie Beutel of Houston, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
