Hodgie B. Armstrong, Jr. was born in Yoakum, Texas, and later raised in Houston, Texas, where he was nurtured in faith, family, and community. He was the beloved son of Hodgie B. Armstrong, Sr. and Earnestine Armstrong. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior at Calvary Baptist Church, laying the foundation for a lifelong walk of strong Christian faith.
Hodgie received his formal education in the Houston Independent School District, attending Dotson Elementary School, Miller Junior High School, and graduating from Jack Yates High School. He continued his studies at Durham Business College, preparing himself for a life marked by diligence and excellence.
On December 18, 1964, Hodgie was united in holy matrimony to Bettye Louise Marshall Armstrong. To this union, two children, Hodgie and LaJuana, were born. Hodgie and Bettye’s marriage of 61 years stands as a beautiful testament of love, commitment, and faithfulness.
Professionally, Hodgie was known for his strong work ethic and leadership. He served faithfully as Manager of Whites Department Store for 11 years and later as a Gasoline Blender Operator for Lyondell Petrochemical, from which he retired after 28 years of dedicated service.
A man of many talents, Hodgie was affectionately known as a “Mr. Fix-It,” always willing and able to lend a helping hand. In his leisure time, he found joy in fishing, playing golf, and exercising, valuing both stewardship of the body and the peace found outdoors in God’s creation.
His faith journey continued through fellowship at Mt. Horem Baptist Church, and in March 1986, he united with Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member.
Hodgie was preceded in death by his parents and seven of his siblings: Lillian Jones, Shirley Green, Marvin Armstrong, Lloyd Armstrong, Mary Sutton, Linda Armstrong Ozan, and Dexter Armstrong.
Hodgie leaves to cherish his precious memory: his devoted wife of 61 years, Bettye Louise Armstrong; his children, Hodgie Bernard Armstrong and LaJuana Armstrong-Jean (son-in-law John Jean); and his beloved grandchildren, Leah Jean and Jonathan Jean. He is also survived by his loving sister, Sharon Armstrong, and a host of nieces and nephews. He will likewise be remembered by his godchildren, Treanor Johnson, Tamera Drumgoole-DuBose, and William Drumgoole, along with those he lovingly nurtured and embraced as family, including Adrian Prescott and Christine (Cockrell) Blaszczy.
Hodgie Bernard Armstrong, Jr. will be remembered for his unwavering faith, servant’s heart, and the steady presence he was to all who knew and loved him. His life stands as a quiet yet powerful witness to faithful commitment to God, faithful love for his family, and faithful service toward others.
