Ian McKinnze Ramsay, P. E., was born June 13, 1954, and died on September 2, 2022. Ian was a proud native Houstonian, and the son of William (Bill) Ramsay and Doris Watson Ramsay. He is survived by his wife Sally Mathis Ramsay, son Travis McKinzie Ramsay; sister Sandra and brother-in-law Jim Parker, sister Barbara and brother-in-law Don Tremble, and sister-in-law Anne Mathis Matz. He is also survived by his nephews Sean Parker (Amy), Ron Tremble, and nieces-in-love Mary Parker and Emily Matz. Ian is preceded in death by his nephew John Parker. Ian is also loved by his awesome life-long friends of 60 plus years Mark Weisser, Richard Weisser, Bill Thomas, Brett Hanka, and Joe Aubin.
Ian’s parents immigrated to the United States from Scotland in the early 1950’s. He was immensely proud to be born an American, but he never forgot his Scottish heritage. He grew up in Spring Branch, graduating from Spring Branch High School in 1972 and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1978 as a mechanical engineer.
Ian began his career at Texas Utilities but quickly moved to the former Houston Lighting & Power Company, (now CenterPoint Energy) where he worked for almost 25 years. Ian served HL&P as manager of Industrial, Large and Commercial Accounts, and other large scale industrial electric projects. After HL&P, Ian spent 13 years at the Port of Houston Authority, where he was Chief Electrical Engineer. Ian rounded out his career at Optimized Process Design as Chief Project Engineer for the company’s natural gas sector.
An avid outdoorsman, Ian was never happier than when he was bird hunting or catching fish. He loved teaching Travis those same skills and they had many fun and memorable trips throughout the years. Ian also loved working on cars, teaching life skills and mentoring Travis’s buddies and driving his golf cart. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
Ian was one in a million! His “Ian-isms” are legendary, and he could tell a story like none other. His hobbies were grilling anything, sitting around the fire pit and taking in the natural world around him. Ian’s biggest pleasure though, was spending time with Travis and Sally. He was so proud of Travis and his accomplishments, and he so loved watching him become the young man that he is today. Travis was his pride and joy, and he loved Sally deeply. She was always his “sweet thing,” for 42 plus years.
A celebration of Ian’s life will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at Champion Forest Baptist Church Chapel, located at 16518 Jersey Drive, Houston Texas 77040. Visitation will begin at 10am, service at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ian’s honor to Texas Parks and Wildlife, www.tpwd.texas.gov, Coastal Conservation Association Texas, www.joincca.org, or charity of your choice.
