Dr. J. Eric Bodin, a devoted husband, father, physician, and lifelong learner, passed away in Houston, on Wednesday, the 26th of February 2025, he was 75 years of age. A man of deep integrity, boundless curiosity, and a heart full of generosity, Eric touched the lives of many through his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering sense of adventure.
Born on the 15th of February 1950, in Houston, Eric was raised with a profound love for learning, instilled by his parents. Alongside his siblings, he explored the world with wide-eyed wonder, tracing his father’s roots in France and developing a deep appreciation for history and culture. This early foundation shaped the man he became—one who was forever drawn to new ideas, experiences, and the beauty of the world around him.
Eric graduated from the Kinkaid School in Houston in 1968. He earned a BS degree in Biology from Stanford University in 1972 and graduated from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1976.
Eric’s passion for understanding people and the world led him to a distinguished career in medicine as an emergency room doctor. He initially practiced in the US Virgin Islands, overseeing emergency management services in St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. Later he returned to Houston where he practiced for twenty five years at Memorial Hermann Northeast in Humble. Known for his calm presence and compassionate care, he saved countless lives while offering comfort and reassurance to his patients and their families. He had a special gift for working with children, speaking to them in a way that eased their fears and made them feel safe. His colleagues admired his honesty, quick thinking, and dedication to the well-being of others.
Beyond his professional life, Eric had an insatiable curiosity, a love for adventure and nature, and a passion for learning. He found solace in the mountains of Breckenridge and enjoyed exploring the oceans, swimming, sailing, or snorkeling. He relished traveling, gardening, classic films, old books and coins, and had an endless fascination in the mysteries of the universe. Among his closest companions was his beloved dog Sammy. More than just a pet, Sammy was an extension of Eric’s spirit—loyal, intelligent and always by his side.
Above all, Eric’s greatest joy was his family. He shared a unique and joyful bond with each of his three daughters, Christa, Jackie, and Ali. He turned everyday moments into memorable learning experiences for his girls, filled with curiosity and wonder. He loved his daughters deeply and was so proud of their accomplishments. Later in life, he met Pat, the love of his life, and together they built a marriage filled with laughter, adventure, and a deep intellectual and emotional connection. Their love story was one of mutual respect, shared values, and an abiding devotion to one another.
A man of quiet wit and a mischievous sense of humor, Eric had a way of making those around him feel at ease. He was a master of well-timed jokes and playful pranks, bringing joy and laughter to every gathering. Yet, he was also a man of great depth, someone who listened intently and made those he spoke with feel truly seen and heard.
Eric’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and June Bodin.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Curtis Hewlett Bodin of Houston; his children, Christa Frey and her husband Manuel of New York City, New York, Jacqueline Buckingham Anderson and her husband James of La Jolla, California, and Ali Ho and her husband J.C. of Spartanburg, South Carolina; his five grandchildren, Chase, Devon, Tristan, Coco, and Sophie; his siblings, Philippe Bodin of Tucson, Arizona, and Julie Converse of Mountain Brook, Alabama.
