

Jaime was born in Tunja, Boyacá, Colombia in 1940. He graduated from La Universidad Javeriana in Santa Fé de Bogotá as a Medical Doctor in 1966. He specialized in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. During medical school, he met his wife Julia Natividad Vargas. They were married 52 years before her death in June of 2020.
Jaime was a devoted father to his three boys. He was a well respected doctor who used his time and talents to teach as a professor of medicine at the University of South Carolina. He also gave back to the entire medical community and his patients by inventing a diagnostic and exploratory technique in gastroscopy that continues to help others. His generosity was not only limited to his efforts in medicine, he was a benefactor to many organizations including Strake Jesuit College Preparatory and St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church. He also opened his home to countless people who needed a helping hand, worked to get an education or just wanted to visit.
In his free time, Jaime loved to laugh and tell jokes. He would play pranks on his friends and family. He was inspired by the world around him and spent time with his entire family traveling the globe including trips to Russia, Egypt and all over Europe. He also had a great love of music, particularly classical music and folkloric Colombian music. He even tried his hand at playing Colombian Tiple. He also danced and performed Spanish Sevillanas for audiences with a dance troupe.
Jaime is preceded in death by his wife Julia Navidad and his parents Salustiano Cuervo Castellanos and Lastenia Rojas de Cuervo. He is survived by his sons Luis Jaime of Moorhead City, NC, José Mauricio [Mary Elizabeth] of Houston, TX, Carlos Martin [Kimberly Lynn] of Chicago, IL, and his grandchildren Nadia Rocio, Juan Carlos, Julian Luis, Aleksandr Martin, José Salustiano, and Dayna Marie. He is mourned by Caria Cuervo (mother of Nadia and Julian). He also leaves behind his sisters Blanca Sandoval [Fernando] and Luz Mery Cuervo, and nephews and nieces including Fernando Sandoval, Jaime Alfredo Oviedo, Paola Andrea Sandoval de Vitola, and Ximena Sula. He is also mourned by his in-Laws Carmen Alicia Vargas de Rodriguez, Clara Inez Vargas, Luisa Elvira Vargas, Maria Christina Vargas, and Luis Roberto Vargas.
