

James Patrick Bailey journeyed into the arms of his Savior after a brief illness on Friday, November 19, 2010 in the presence of his loving family. Jim was born March 5, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Joan Mulvihill Bailey and Edward Bradley Bailey. He served his country in the 11th Army Airborne division during the occupation of Japan following WWII. He graduated with honors in 1948 from Loyola College, Baltimore, Maryland where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu honor fraternity. Jim then attended the University of Texas School of Law where he graduated with honors as a member of Phi Delta Phi honor fraternity in 1951. He was a member of the American Bar Association. Texas Bar Association and Houston Bar Association. He practiced law for many years in the firm of Bryan, Suhr, Bering & Bailey and then as a founding partner in Sullivan, Bailey & King. He received his doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas in 1998.
Jim was always quite active apart from his practice of Law. He developed real estate, including the first office building in the Riverway area and also loved coaching youth sports. He was President of the Sierra Club of Houston. Jim was dedicated to his faith and was an original member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Houston and was instrumental in the opening of St. Michael’s Catholic School. He was an active member of the choir at St. Therese Catholic Church, in Seattle, Washington where he resided for approximately 15 years before returning to Houston. He was also a champion of the Tlinglit Indian nation of Alaska and provided many hours of pro bono work to their cause as well as those of many of the indigenous nations of the Americas. A friend to all, Jim counseled so many friends and strangers on a very quiet and personal level during his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Joe. He is survived by his children, JoAnn Bailey O’Toole, Kackie Bailey Dunwoody and husband David, Patti Bailey Broussard and husband John, Paula Bailey Cole and husband David, James Patrick Bailey, Jr. and wife Reagan, all of Houston, Mary Bailey Arnold and husband Hal of Corpus Christi, Bridget Reid Bailey and John Patrick Bailey of Seattle, Washington. Twenty grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren were devoted to their “Dadan”. He is also survived by six brothers and three sisters and tens of nieces and nephews that also loved him dearly.
The family wishes to extend its sincere appreciation most especially to his loving caregivers, Vanessa Lewis , Marshall and Alma Lyons and to the incredibly compassionate staff of Houston Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Monday, November 29, 2010 at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024 with a rosary being recited at 7:00 pm in the Hunters Creek chapel. The mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 10:30 am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks, Houston, 77079. Interment will follow at Forest Park , 12800 Westheimer, Houston, Texas 77077.
A memorial service will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church , 3416 East Marion, Seattle, Washington on December 11, 2010.
