James “Jimmy” Anthony Poston, 85, returned to his Heavenly Father on February 15, 2022. Jimmy was born in San Antonio, TX on December 13, 1936 to Jesse and Henrietta Poston. He was raised on a dairy farm which equipped him with a deep sense of responsibility and a strong work ethic. Surrounded by a brother and five sisters, Jimmy was protective with an unwavering devotion to his family.
Placing a premium on learning, he was both a teacher and a student. After earning a degree in Physical Chemistry from UT Austin, Jimmy taught math and coached football at St. Gerard Catholic School. He then enjoyed a long career with Gulf Oil, which took him from Baton Rouge, LA to Seoul, Korea and finally home to Houston in 1973. After retirement, his quest for knowledge led him to online courses in history and the mysteries of the Triune God.
Jimmy was a product of his time; he considered a man’s word and a handshake to be a binding contract. He was always ready to dispense advice, a funny joke, or a handkerchief. He enjoyed thought-provoking conversations running the gamut from politics/current events to religion. His many passions included gardening, woodworking, stained glass, storytelling, and crossword puzzles. His love for pecan pie and the smell of his cherry pipe tobacco will be fondly remembered.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Henrietta, and siblings, Nancy Poraski, Mary Lee Bartz, Jesse B Poston, and Betty Lois Kissling. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Judy; sisters Joyce Yanta and Judith E Poston; daughters Susan White, Kathleen Zettel, Jennifer Duncan and their spouses; and 7 grandchildren.
Although the light of the world is temporarily dimmed for those he left behind, we are comforted knowing he rests with Our Lord.
A memorial mass for James will be held Friday, March 4, 2022 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079. Inurnment to follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079.
