James "Jimmy" Joseph Lyons was born on December 25th 1954 in La Jolla, California to Harold Joseph Lyons and Nancy Poidomani Lyons. Although not born here, Jimmy considered himself a native Texan moving to Houston when he was 1 year old. He attended Frostwood Elementary, Memorial Middle and graduated from Memorial High School. He then attended the University of Houston to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Jimmy was the proud owner of Lyons Development Group, Inc. which built custom homes in the Spring Valley area.
Jimmy loved to build things for his family in his garage and work on restoring his 1936 Graham. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and loved to cook for his family and friends. Jimmy was always cutting up, having fun, and making people laugh.
Jimmy became a member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1983, joined the Horspitality committee and was a founding member of the VIP Transportation committee where he worked his way up to Chairman. Jimmy became a Director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2000, In 2016, he was serving on the transportation committee, Armed Forces Appreciation committee, and the Area Go Texan committee.
Jimmy was blessed with many friends over the years in the building community and especially in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo community. Jimmy made friends wherever he went and influenced many lives.
Jimmy married his wife, Cindy in 1977 and has two daughters, Tanya and Jamie. Jimmy met Cindy while buying a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner from Cindy's older sister and asked her, “Who is that red head?". Jimmy's youngest daughter, Jamie is married to Nathan Kelley and has two daughters, Cora and Lillian. As Poppy, Jimmy loved his two granddaughters, enjoyed playing with them out in the backyard, building Cora a garden, teaching her to hit a ball off a tee, and enjoyed swinging with her in the hammock. With Lillian, Jimmy had a special silly language that would have her talking and laughing.
A supportive Father of his daughter Tanya's softball teams, Jimmy went on to coach the first ever non California team to win a national championship; the team was the first ever to win back-to-back national championships in 2000 and 2001, for ASA 18 & under Gold. With an impressive phone list of college softball coaches, Jimmy was instrumental toward the girls receiving college softball scholarships. Always one to advocate for success, Jimmy often spoke about the achievements of his high school age softball girls, the Katy Cruisers, taking on the USA Olympic Team to extra innings in a 1-0 loss. This was the best competition the USA Olympic Team had on their tour of the country on their way to the Olympic Games. Jimmy knew he had a magical group of girls with great chemistry. One of those Cruisers later became a two times Olympian and gold medalist winner. He was very proud of all of his girls.
Whether you knew him as Jimmy, Honey, Dad or Poppy, he will remain in our hearts and memories forever.
He is preceded in death by his father Harold Joseph Lyons , mother Nancy Poidomani Lyons, and brother Winfield Scott Lyons.
