Joe was born on November 7, 1943, to Lee and Rosie Church of Houston, Texas. He was their second born and only son, later to become known as “Baby Joe” to all his aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was loved by all who knew him! Joe attended Reagan High School, and at the age of 20 in 1964, joined the Army National Guard Reserves, where he served 6 years.
After meeting his loving wife Josie, they first settled in the Timbergrove area, later moving to Candlelight Plaza where they raised their three children: Vicki, Lee, and Joseph. Joe had meticulous skill when it came to woodwork and cabinet making, dedicating most of his career to this field. His work was featured in many of the local downtown buildings, as well as around the country in several high-end stores such as Gucci.
Joe loved life and always enjoyed being with family and the outdoors. Over the years, his hobbies included fishing, hunting, cooking, baking, and finding new recipes! Gardening was another of his passions, as well as playing the 777 slots at the casino! A little known fact about Joe – he loved birds! So much so, that he bred and sold parakeets back in the 80’s. With over 100 parakeets, he hand-built 20+ nest boxes and walk-in cage himself!
Unfortunately, he lost his wife Josie of 55 years only a few short months ago. Also preceded in death by his mother and father, Rosie and Lee Church; sisters Diane Church and Rosalie Church Simmank-Brady.
