John Carroll Breed, a Native Houstonian and fifth generation Texan, was born April 16, 1933. John and his wife Maxine married in 1953 and moved to Memorial Bend in 1957, just two years after graduating with a B.A. degree from Rice University in 1955.
John and Maxine were founding members of Tallowood Baptist Church (then known as Memorial Baptist Temple). They joined in 1959 on the same Sunday that Dr. Russell Dilday joined as the first permanent pastor. Carter Breed and Ellen Dilday were the first babies in the Tallowood nursery while the church was still meeting in Woodview Elementary on Look Road north of Katy Road. John taught a boys’ Sunday School class under an oak tree and coached their baseball team. Later, he taught a men’s bible class for 25 years.
John graduated from Rice in 1955 and got his law degree in 1962 from South Texas College of Law. He worked in Houston and Washington, D.C. for many years for Tenneco, Inc. and then opened his private law practice in 1973. He practiced law for 40 years.
John was married to Maxine Crenshaw Breed for 51 years and they have two children, J. Carter and Bethany Kay.
John enjoyed genealogical study and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Though the Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on Breed’s Hill in Boston, his forefathers were Revolutionary War patriots in South Carolina after founding Sandy Creek Baptist Church in North Carolina in 1750. It has been written that the Sandy Creek Baptist Church was the first evangelical Baptist church in the South and was the mother of 1,100 subsequent churches.
John married Suzann Yates on May 5, 2006. They were married 10 years and he went Home as an anniversary gift from our Lord on May 5, 2016.
John is survived by his wife Suzann Yates Breed, his son J. Carter Breed and wife, Kris, three granddaughters Faith, Avery and Megan and his daughter Bethany Breed Martin and husband David and their two children Madison and Benjamin of Austin, Texas and his sister, Kay Breed Walters.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be Monday, May 16, 2016 at Tallowood Baptist Church at 11:00am with Dr. Duane Brooks officiating.
In lieu of flowers an Honorarium can be made in his name to Tallowood Baptist Church (555 Tallowood Dr. Hou. 77024) or Heart of Texas House of Prayer (10984 E. Crystal Falls Pwy. Leander, TX 78641).
