His honorable discharge was marked by numerous commendations, including the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Air Assault Badge, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and Kuwait Liberation Medal. His career in IT led him to work on military bases worldwide, contributing to crucial technological advancements before his retirement. Beyond his professional and military achievements, John had a deep passion for golf, indulging in sweets, playing video games, and spending time with his beloved cats, Cagney and Lacey. A cowboy at heart, he embraced country music and cherished traveling with his wife, exploring historic battle sites and visiting casinos. His generosity, kindness, and unwavering willingness to help others earned him the admiration of all who knew him.
A devoted Catholic, John’s faith guided his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Marynel Dillon; his stepdaughter, Laura Restrepo; his siblings, Frank and Pat; his nephews, Jesus, Marco, and Austin; his nieces, Karen, Caitlin, Anna, and Sofia; his mother-in-law, Nelita Tineo; his sisters-in-law, Marila, Jesnel, and Marly; and his brothers-in-law, Wilfredo and Antonio. His presence was a source of warmth and comfort, a steadfast hand always ready to help, and a heart that held space for everyone he met.
His adventurous soul carried him across the world, but his greatest joy was always in the company of his loved ones—sharing stories, exploring new places, and finding beauty in life’s simplest moments. His legacy will live on in the memories he created the wisdom he shared, and the love he poured into his family and friends.
