It is with great sadness we announce the unexpected loss of our beautiful boy, Jonathan Izaiah Arevalo. Born on November 29, 1998, our Jonathan was 21 years old, the beloved son of Rosa Torres & Gene Arevalo, brother of Jennifer Arevalo and uncle to Michael Caballero. He was the grandchild of Julio & Tomasa Torres and Eugenio & Esther Arevalo. Jonathan had a large family and felt the love and support of his aunts and uncles, Julio & Esmeralda Torres, Arturo & Marisela Alvarado, Jose Torres, Benito Torres, Anthony & Patricia Timms, Fernando &Cristina Valles. He also had numerous cousins that loved and looked up to him. To many, he was more like an older brother than a cousin.
Jonathan was known for many things, but it was his kind soft spoken nature that was often commented on by those who met him. He was a gentle soul that would watch over those he loved, and bigger than everyone else in his family, he was quick to lend a helping hand. Jonathan had a very close relationship with his sister Jennifer, who he called Jenny. She was his protector from a young age and he knew to call her and she would quickly be by his side. He was so proud to be an uncle to Michael and could often be found playing with him and calling him “Papas”. Michael and other children were drawn to him; he could usually calm them when others couldn’t.
Jonathan was always curious about how things worked, most likely something he inherited from his dad, and they would curl up for hours watching “How To” shows and videos. Everything from how to make a potato gun to how Master watch makers build Swiss time pieces.
Growing up, Jonathan struggled with dyslexia and fought many years to overcome it. He graduated high school from Xavier Academy and was accepted to the University of Arizona. He learned the value of hard work and would get up early to help his uncles or dad. He later earned the respect of his supervisors and co-workers at a job he loved, building scaffolding high on the side of buildings.
Jonathan was quiet and always respectful when you first met him. Once you got to know him you quickly discovered he had a great sense of humor and could tell the best jokes. He knew all the words to Kung Fu Panda and Eye of the Tiger. He would play them in the mornings while getting dressed. He was particular about his clothes and liked it when his abuela Tomasa would iron them for him. He was close with his uncles, loyal to them always, and quick to lend them a hand. He chose his friends carefully and loved hanging out with them. He listened to rap but could make everyone laugh by belting out a couple of lines from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. For some reason his favorite female artists were Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey. Family would frequently hear him jamming to Taylor Swift while riding in his Jeep.
He was like a ray of sunshine to his mother and could always make her smile. He was his dad’s only son, but also his best buddy. They loved hanging out, working on the Jeep, going off road and going muddin’. Gene would often wake up to find Jonathan asleep next to him.
Jonathan will truly be missed by his family and friends and he will continue to be with us in our hearts.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Texas 77039. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 501 Tidwell, Houston, Texas 77022.
