Jorge Antonio Marqués, husband, father, accountant, teacher, mentor, and more, passed away in his sleep on August 23, 2021 at the age of 90 in Houston, Texas, surrounded by his family. Jorge’s life was the epitome of the American Dream. Born in Pinar del Rio, Guanajay, Cuba on April 19, 1931, he arrived in the US in 1959 in search of a better life for both himself and his wife Gabriela, whom he married in November of 1958.
His work ethic was unparalleled, receiving degrees in Accounting from the University of Havana in Cuba and in Bilingual Education from the University of St Thomas, retiring from various companies such as Shell Oil Company and The Methodist Hospital, and teaching in HISD until 2010, after which he continued to substitute until the ripe age of 81. His priority was always taking care of his family, and he valued sharing his passions with them such as his Catholic faith, which he developed from a very young age, the arts, education, and memories of the good ol’ days. He also had an affinity for languages, studying Italian, Russian, and Chinese while being fluent in Spanish, English, and French. A lifelong prankster, he would hide in closets for as long as needed to get the opportunity to scare someone, and his vibrant humor would always bring laughter to those around him. A sight impervious to fading with age, he rocked his favorite Cuban speedo until his final days, showcasing his ideal male physique. He was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church for over 50 years and always lived his life to glorify God.
Jorge was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel Marqués and Cándida Martinez; his brothers, Sergio Marqués and Carlos Marqués; and his daughter, Lissette A. Marqués. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gabriela Marqués; his daughter, Karen L. Marqués and her husband Jason Jones; his son, Eric Marqués and Sue St.Michael; his grandchildren, Ashley Lynn Millay, Claire Elyse Mills, Mitchell Bennett Flaherty, Elyssa Corinne Flaherty, Jakob Jedi Jones, and Gabriela Elaine Marqués Jones; his great-grandchild, Jackson Jude Mills; his brothers, Manuel Marqués, Antonio Marqués, and Rene Marqués; his nieces, Marita, Elsie, and Cecilia; and his nephews, Manny, Tony, Carlitos, and Pablo.
An evening vigil will take place at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home on Thursday, September 2, 2021 from 5-8pm. The following day, Friday, September 3, 2021 a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Michael’s Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd, Houston, TX 77056 at 10:00am with interment to follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.
