

Joseph Evans Dewhart Sr. was born to Arlee Dewhart Sr. and Carrie Carrol Dewhart in Shreveport, LA. Both parents, two sisters, two brothers and a son, preceded him in death. Accepting Christ at an early age, Joseph was baptized at the Union Spring Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Joseph E. Martin.
Joseph, also called “Jelly Joe”, “Pops”, “Dad”, “PawPaw” and “OG” by family members, attended public schools in Caddo Parish, Shreveport, LA. Joseph later met and married Olivia Vinson Dewhart, and to this union, one child was born. Joseph leaves behind one son, three daughters, and one son who preceded him in death.
Joseph enlisted into the United States Army Reserves in Shreveport, LA. from October 2nd, 1959 – April 17th, 1960. After serving in the United States Army Reserves, Joseph moved to Houston, Texas where he was employed by Bama Foods for many years as a Shipping & Receiving Supervisor. Joseph later retired from Bama Foods and begin enjoying his new life role as a proud Grandfather & Decon for Mount Horeb Missionary Baptist Church. Joseph was under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Samuel H. Smith, Senior Pastor of Mount Horeb Missionary Baptist Church for the past 21 years in 4th Ward Houston, Texas 77019. Joseph truly loved serving God, his Family, Mount Horeb Church Community, and his Friends. He also loved to cook soul food Sunday dinners at home after church for his Wife, Children, and Grandchildren to spend quality time together. Joseph is a foodie (LOL!) and loved eating at the Grand Lux restaurant in the Houston Galleria Area for every birthday he was blessed to have before his passing. Joseph’s favorite meal to order from Grand Lux was the T-Bone Steak, Garlic Mashed Potato’s, Steamed Asparagus, and Sweet Tea for his beverage! Joseph is an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching professional boxing, football, and basketball games throughout the week. In addition, Joseph enjoyed traveling with his family to Washington Pennsylvania, Phoenix Arizona, Austin Texas, and Dallas Texas. Now Joseph has traveled to be with his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, in Heaven on June 15th, 2025, where he will dwell with the Lord for eternity!
Joseph Evans Dewhart, Sr. is survived by his wife, Olivia Vinson Dewhart; his son, Joseph Evans Dewhart Jr. (Tiffiny S. Dewhart) of Houston, Texas; his daughter, Nealia Shetell Dewhart (Christopher Matthews) of Houston, Texas; his daughter, Gayle Mack of Shreveport, LA; his daughter, Tamara Boudreaux of Shreveport, LA; and his son, Cedric Hicks of Houston, Texas who preceded him in death. He is also survived by one brother, David L. Dewhart of Houston, TX; two brothers and two sisters, Arlee Dewhart Jr., Versall Dewhart, Rosie D. Sommerville and Jewery B. Whitaker, who preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, who truly loves him and will miss him dearly!
A visitation for Joseph will be held Friday, June 20, 2025 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at Paradise Funeral Home, Inc, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088. The funeral service will immediately follow Friday, June 20, 2025 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The committal service will be held Friday, June 20, 2025 from 3:45 PM to 4:00 PM, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088.
