

Joseph Stewart Horrigan was born on the 22nd of November, 1938 in Houston, Texas to Ruth Mize Horrigan and Joseph Raymond Horrigan. He passed away at his home on the 28th of July at age 78. In his brief battle with leukemia, Joe showed great courage.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his two older sisters, Ann Horrigan Lyon Hoy of Houston, and Nancy Horrigan McCullough of Woodside, California. His beloved wife, Katherine (Knolle) Horrigan, passed away in May of 2016. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Martin (Edouard), Katherine Quie (Bill), Erin Savage (Greg); his six grandchildren Tristan and Celeste Martin, William and Emma Quie and Lauren and Faye Savage. Other survivors include his nieces Dana Bukowski, Melissa Johnson, and Jennifer Lyon. Joe had many special friends, too numerous to mention, who will miss him greatly.
Joe was a lifelong resident of Houston. He attended St. Anne’s Elementary School and graduated from The Kinkaid School in 1957. He received a B.A. from Duke University in 1961 and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas in 1964. He was a law clerk for the U.S. District Court of Appeals and U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for Judge Homer Thornberry. He greatly valued his educational opportunities.
Joe was a well-known probate attorney and expert in his field. He founded the probate law firm of Horrigan and Goehrs, LLP in 1986. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, member of the American, Texas & Houston Bar Associations, Board Certified in Probate & Estate Planning by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and was a frequent author and speaker for continuing legal education programs. He was awarded the Houston Bar Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award by the Probate, Trusts and Estate Section in recognition for his distinguished service to the Bar in 2010. He was designated as a “Texas Super Lawyer” by Texas Monthly Magazine.
Joe was an avid reader, story-teller, and history buff who loved the game of golf, fishing, photography, solo breakfasts at Avalon Diner, and summer trips to Colorado with his family. He was a great dancer.
A funeral service will be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 5th of August in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited for a reception to greet the family in the adjacent grand foyer.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers during Saturday’s services are Joe’s sons-in-law Edouard Martin, Bill Quie, and Greg Savage, grandson, William Quie, and close friends, Pearson Grimes and Mills Duncan.
A private interment for the family will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
