Larry Dale Cudd, Sr. was a vibrant soul who lived life to the fullest, and his story deserves to be told with the joy and love he brought to those around him. Born on February 6, 1952 in San Antonio, Texas to Lawrence Cudd and Dorothy Mann, Larry was the cherished middle child among two brothers and four sisters: Roger Cudd, Brian Cudd, Shirley Hodges, Florence Hughes, Carol Davis and Dorothy “Sissy” Michael. He spent his early years on a dairy farm in San Antonio before moving to Houston, where he would create a lifetime of memories.
Larry was a man of strength and integrity; his presence commanded respect, and his words carried weight. He shared a deep and enduring love with his high school sweetheart, Julia Ann VanMeter Cudd. Their journey together began on January 11, 1974, and they celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised three beloved children: Larry Dale Jr., Clinton Wayne, and Julia Nicole "Nicky." Larry's heart was full of love for his family, including his grandchildren: Addison, Brylee, and Grady Church; Austin and Travis Cudd, as well as his son-in-law, Jason Church, and daughter-in-law, Carol Davis Cudd.
A proud Texan, Larry graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1972. After a few years in the funeral industry, he enlisted in the Army in 1986. His service took him to the Gulf War in 1990, where he faced challenges that he kept close to his heart. Rising to the rank of Sergeant, he dedicated himself to his role as a diesel mechanic, balancing his commitment to his family with his duty to his country.
Following his military career, Larry continued to work as a diesel mechanic, first with Mustang Caterpillar and later with another company until health issues led him to retirement. This new chapter allowed him to spend precious time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Additionally, Larry was a devoted dog lover, always finding joy in the companionship of his furry friends. He passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, at the Michael E. Debakey VA Hospital in Houston, holding his beloved wife’s hand. His legacy of love, strength, and dedication will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
