

Larry was born 85 years ago in Willis, TX in 1939 to William Robert and Mary Lee Orr. They moved to Denver Harbor in Houston where he started grade school. In 1958,after his high school graduation he joined the United States Air Force. After his basic training in the States he was stationed at Fairford Air Force Base in England and he worked in the RAF 3919Consolidated Aircraft Squadron on B-47 Bombers.
Larry married Sarah Jo Hayes in 1960 at Denver Harbor Assembly of God Church. Sarah was approved by USAF to join him while he was in England. They resided at The Cerney Wick Mill House which is now a historical site. Their daughter Amanda Renee was born in 1961 at the Air Force Base.
While in England, Larry and Sarah enjoyed building, flying and sometimes crashing and repairing remote control airplanes. They drove a Morris Minor that always stuck to the pavement because it was so cold there. They both would tell you that their experience there was a most joyous time in their lives.
After his discharge in 1962, Larry and his family returned to Houston where they welcomed a son Larry Gene Orr Jr. in 1964.
Larry accepted a position with the Houston Police Department in 1962. Over the years he worked his way up in rank to Superintendent of the Communications Division where he worked to coordinate radio communications and was involved in implementing Computers.
He was a member of several associations and earned many awards during his employment.
Larry retired from HPD in 1989 after 23 years of service and took a position at Harris County Sheriff & rsquo;s Department. There he worked as Director of Harris County Information Technology Center for 17 years and then he retired again. March 21,2006 was declared Larry Orr day by the county judge at the time.
Larry had a lot of hobbies. Amateur (Ham) Radio was one of his favorites which he enjoyed with his father, brother, grandson and many others. His call sign is K5UOI. He was proud that he built the tallest radio tower in his neighborhood in his backyard. He built radios, a TV, an organ and many other things over the years. He even reworked his juke box to not require any money to play his 50 & rsquo;s records. He also had a darkroom in his office at home where he developed the photos that he took. He worked on many computers and could always help when any of us had a problem. He could always fix anything that was broken.
He is preceded in death by his wife Sarah Jo Orr and his son Larry Gene Orr, Jr. He is survived by daughter Amanda Renee Orr, Grandchildren, John Elliott and Holly Marie Frazier, Allison Hope and Clayton Coy Craig and Great Grandchildren Tristan Vaughan and Addison Grace Craig, Heidi Marie and
John Fritz Frazier, Sister Lora Eileen Baker and Brother Billy Bob Orr.
A graveside service for Larry will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX. Following the graveside service will be a reception from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX.
