

Dr. Laurence Abrams, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, was born in Boston, Massachusetts on the 30th of June 1937, to Aaron and Jeanette Shea Abrams, and passed away in Houston, on Thursday, the 16th of November 2021. He was 84 years of age.
Dr. Abrams graduated from high school in Ferndale, Michigan and went on to attend Wayne State University in Detroit, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1959 and a Masters of Arts in General Experiment Psychology in 1963. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his Ph.D. in 1964. His internship was served at the Waco VA Hospital in Waco, Texas from 1963-1964. In 1998, he attended training in Dispute Resolution/Mediation at the Wilmington Institute of Trial Services in Dallas.
He was a member of the American Psychological Association, the Texas Psychological Association, (President and other offices), the Houston Psychological Association, (President and other offices), the National Register of Health Science Providers in Psychology. Locally, he served on the Board of Adjustments in Hedwig Village, in Houston, Texas.
In 1984, he was appointed to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologist, (Chairman 1998-1999) and as one of the signers he signed the license, adding a little heart, for his wife, Dr. Barbara Claire Abrams, when she obtained her license. In 1996, he received the Karl Heiser Presidential Award for Advocacy on behalf of professional psychology. In 2007, he received the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Psychological Association for Record of Exemplary Professional Service.
In addition to his Private Psychology Practice, he had held positions at Baylor College of Medicine, the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences (TRIMS) and the University of Houston (all in Houston).
Larry was an extremely devoted father and husband, and was blessed to have many devoted and enduring friendships.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Barbara Claire Abrams; his sons, Terrence Abrams and his wife Brenda; Bradford Abrams and his wife, Christine; his daughter, Lisabeth Faucher and her husband Paul; his grandchildren, Peyton Abrams, Bryce Abrams, Stefanie Faucher, Emma Brookover and her husband Eric, and Kelcie Roberts. He is also survived by his sister, Arlene Vollmer; niece, Erica Hawkins and her husband Skip; and nephews, Kent Vollmer and Joseph Vollmer. He will also be missed by his brother-in-law, Mike Cameron and his wife, Diane, and their daughter Kristen Cameron; and his two
Dobermans, Magic and Razor.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 20th of December, in the Sanctuary of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive in Houston.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent sanctuary lobby.
