Laverne Wycoff Thomas was born on February 28, 1936 to Eddie and Mary Wycoff in Houston, Texas. To this union, ten children were born: Eddie, Vincent, Catherine, Hubert, Leon, Theodore, Verdell, Mildren, Wilbert, and Laverne. All but Mildren have preceded her in death.
She passed away on October 14, 2023, at the age of 87. Growing up, she had a good life as the youngest and only child at home with her mother and father. Since there were no children in her neighborhood, she found joy in riding her bicycle which she referred to as her company after school.
Laverne, of Madear as she was more affectionately known as, attended Burrus Elementary School from 1943-1951. Later that year, she entered Phyllis Wheatley Senior High School where she graduated in 1954. She then attended Houston Community College for a couple of years.
Madear loved to dance. All you had to do was put on Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" and a good time would soon follow. She also made the best sweet potato pies that her family could barely keep their hands off of.
She leaves behind her daughter, Melrite, (Fruty) and Telisha (Tiki); eight grandchildren: Metric (Pooh), Harold (Beanie), Sharelle, Arvis (A.J.), Corey, Willie, Mikey, and Jaleesa; fourteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of many relatives and friends.
In death, Madear joins her two other daughters Glenda and Connie.
