Lee Sims, age 66, left this earth unexpectedly to be with our Lord and Savior on November 2, 2024. Born on April 18, 1958, in Houston, Texas, Lee was raised in Conroe, Texas, where he graduated from Conroe High School in 1976. A dedicated baseball player known for his signature high-leg-kick wind-up, Lee made his mark as a standout left-handed pitcher, joining the Conroe Tigers' varsity team as a freshman and securing a starting position all four years. From early on, Lee demonstrated the drive and determination that would define his life.
Lee’s “professional” journey began humbly with his first job at Piggly Wiggly. After high school, Lee pursued his childhood passion for cars, becoming a porter at Lester Goodson Pontiac. Soon after starting, Lee asked for a promotion to salesman, and his boss handed him a stack of leadership and business books to read, a challenge that would change his life. Lee not only read every book but returned to the dealership ready to prove himself, dressed in a “baby blue” leisure suit. This relentless determination marked the beginning of a successful career in sales, ultimately opening the door to a successful entrepreneurial journey.
In 1989, Lee met Sherry while working at Frontier Ford in Humble. Although Sherry was initially adamant in her decision not to date coworkers, she was no match for Lee's persistence, charm, and wit. They fell in love quickly, and within six weeks, Lee proposed. They were married and moved to Kingwood shortly after. Together, they started Deerbrook Auto Brokers, a family business they both worked at full-time. Five years later, Lee’s greatest blessing came when they became parents to two daughters, Ashley and Stephanie, who brought immeasurable happiness to their lives.
Lee and Sherry were passionate about travel and adventure. They began exploring the world together, from cruises to RV trips across the country. This love of travel soon became a business venture when they founded Sims RV World in 2000. However, after a friend, Jerry Davis, invited him to Florida to assist with hurricane relief efforts, Lee’s heart was also touched by a more profound purpose—mission work. His calling took him around the globe, to Indonesia, Haiti, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Myanmar, and numerous places in the U.S. These journeys allowed him to serve others, bringing love and hope to people in desperate need.
Though his travels were many, Lee never missed an opportunity to support his daughters. He was a constant presence at Ashley and Stephanie’s games, recitals, and events, coaching their basketball and soccer teams, and cheering them on from the sidelines. He was their biggest fan, and his pride in their accomplishments was immeasurable.
In 2020, Lee, his daughter Ashley, and son-in-law Trey founded Ash-Lee RV. Working side by side, this venture allowed Lee to pass on invaluable lessons to Ashley and Trey while creating lasting memories as they worked together each day. Lee instilled his strong leadership qualities in both of his daughters and found great pleasure in watching them embrace their own leadership journeys. After graduating college, Stephanie also followed her entrepreneurial spirit, operating a smoothie bowl business in Waco. These business ventures allowed both daughters to connect deeply with their father and carry forward his legacy of hard work and leadership.
Over the past year, Lee truly lived life to the fullest. One of the greatest joys of Lee’s life came when Ashley and Trey welcomed their son, Jackson, into the world. As "G-pop," Lee's presence lit up Jackson’s world—no one could make him smile quite like G-pop. Later this year, he and Sherry fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to five European countries. During their travels, they had the opportunity to meet up with their daughters, son-in-law, and Jackson in Greece before continuing their journey to Belgium, where they reunited with extended family they hadn’t seen in years.
Lee’s passion for helping others remained unwavering throughout his life. In his final months, he continued living out his calling by working with Dream Makers Legacy International, a non-profit he founded in 2007. He supported small towns devastated by Hurricane Helene as a “second responder” in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. His selflessness, deep love for the Lord, and boundless willingness to serve others left a lasting impact.
Lee is preceded in death by his father, Lee Wilburn Sims, and his mother-in-law, Albertine Schaffer; his nephews, Joshua Schaffer-Franco and Gerad Schaffer-Franco. He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Sherry Sims; his daughters, Ashley Sims Wisenbaker and husband Trey, and Stephanie Sims; his beloved grandson, Jackson Wisenbaker; his mother, Shirley Sims Felder; his siblings, Bart Sims, Cheryl Sims Rowell, and Dean Sims; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cherished friends.
Lee’s life was a testament to love, faith, service, and dedication to family. He leaves a legacy of kindness, generosity, and a passion for making the world a better place. Lee’s love for his work and family shined through in everything he did. He often referred to himself as a “messed up messenger,” but in truth, he was a messenger of love, hope, and grace.
Services will be held at Grace Church of Humble, 7224 N Sam Houston Pkwy E.
Visitation Friday the 8th from 6-8 PM, Funeral Service Saturday the 9th at 10 AM.
