Lilly was a one of a kind sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was born on May 23, 1926. While very young, her family moved back to Canton, China where she attended grade school and was number one in her class. As a mom, she expected the same of her children.
During the Japanese invasion of China, Lilly and some of her siblings were fortunate enough to come back to America. Settling in Arkansas, friends later introduced her to Paul Chin Wing. They married and bought a neighborhood grocery store, Wing's Food Market in Houston's Fifth Ward. They worked 7 days a week, taking only Christmas off.
Lilly had many roles and was known by many names. She was wife to Paul. Mom to her children, Dorothy Chew and husband Calvin; Betty Lou; Pansy Gee and husband Don; and Donald Chiu and his wife Jo Ann. She was Po, or Yn-yn, or Mommoo (grandmother) to Harding Paul Yep and great-grand daughters, Jordan and Hayden Yep; Phillip Chew, wife Uyen and great-grand daughter Emilia Chew; Christi and husband, Lysander Shih. She was Po to Dana Canonico and fiancé, Fred Stewart and his son Jori; Marcie Lou; Kimberly Gee; and Christopher Gee and wife, Katie.
She was Yn-yn to Kristen Chiu; Tiffany Chiu; Michael Chiu and his wife Emily. She was Tai-Po to Riley Canonico and Bock-Bock to Kameron and Logan Chiu. Aunt Pauline was what her many nieces and nephews called her and Miss Lilly or Miss Wing to many of her friends and acquaintances. Her legal name was Lilly Ma Lum Wing. But regardless of what name you knew her by, it was her caring, strong will, independence, and wisdom that people recognized, came to respect and love.
Lilly enjoyed cooking (the best pecan pies in Texas!); sewing (our names were embroidered on our gym clothes); gardening (just see the pictures); nature and finding the best bargains. Her passion though was her family. After the store was sold in the late sixties, Mom cared for her children and then her grandchildren. And after Dad's life changing surgery, she cared for him. It is that "caring with all your heart" that she gave and would want us to remember and learn.
On March 14, 2018 she left us to carry on her legacy of love, caring for family, of strength, and of her unique wisdom.
Visitation will be Friday, March 23, 5:30pm-8:00pm; services, Saturday, the 24th, 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Red Cross or a charity of your choice in honor of Lilly Wing.
