He was born on January 25, 1930, to Elonzo “Lonnie” Cooper Easter and Lois Belle Gibson. They lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at that time. He shared many stories of his adventures with his older brother, Derral, and younger brother, Darwin, as they grew up in New Mexico.
He finished school in Elida, New Mexico. The call of the military came soon after, when he joined the U.S. Navy and was a member for one year. He then became a part of the Navy Reserve. When he married, he joined the Army National Guard. These enlistments marked the beginning of his military career, which spanned 38 years and 4 months. His service included two tours of duty in Vietnam, a position as an Advisor of the Florida National Guard, where he served as Survivor’s Assistant in Southern Florida. His next duty position was at the Presidio, followed by a post at Luke Air Force in NORAD. Ft. Hood was the next post where he proudly served. His career was completed with the Army Reserves in Houston. He retired with the rank of Colonel.
On June 19, 1949, he had a blind date with the love of his life and future wife, Peggy Owen. They married on September 3, 1949, and enjoyed 76 years of marriage before his passing. We were always impressed, comforted, and proud of their level of devotion to each other.
He and Peggy were parents of four children—Donna, Susan, Janet and David. They have 12 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
All who knew him remembered his many great qualities—lovingly devoted to Peggy and all family, reliable, always patient, even-tempered, honest in all
dealings, hard-working, good provider, ever present protector, excellent example of Christian values to everyone—a solid foundation for our family. We have been blessed to be a part of his life!
He will be greatly missed. We look forward to seeing him again in heaven.
