Marcia West Moore, born on the 28th of January 1930, passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 22nd of August 2021, in Houston. She was born in Galveston, Texas to Marie S. Moore of Galveston and Fredrick West Moore, attorney, of Austin. She received additional love and attention from her uncle, Joseph W. Moore, attorney, of Houston; her aunt, Paula Duggan of Houston; her grandmother, Margaret Moore and her aunt, Jessie Smith, both of Austin.
She attended the University of Texas, winning several swimming and diving honors and pledging Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She graduated from the University of Texas earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and from the University of Houston earning a Master of Arts in English Literature.
As a child, she had developed a keen interest in ballet and knew, from reading, the name of every Russian dancer in the original Ballet Russe, the O.B.R. Years later, each Christmas night, she and her parents watched the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo perform in the Music Hall in Houston.
While Marcia was still in college, her grandmother gave her a beautiful trip to western Canada – Vancouver Victoria, British Columbia; Banff and Lake Louise, which she adored. After college she improved her typing skills and became a secretary at the Atlantic Refining Company in Houston, where she enjoyed many friends.
Marcia taught school for many years at Marshall Junior High School and several high schools in HISD. She travelled extensively in Europe, especially London, Paris, Vienna, and Seville.
She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the Junior League, Trinity Church, the English-Speaking Union, and the Alliance Francaise.
Marcia had always loved all animals, especially her father's pointer bird dogs, which were kept in a large pen in the back yard. One day she let both of them out of their pen, unleashing them to let them run in the park and be free. Unfortunately, one ran away and was gone for almost 30 minutes. Luckily, he returned and Marcia quickly released him, learning for the first time how difficult it is to have large animals in a big city.
She leaves behind her sister, Julia Jones of San Diego, California and formerly of Houston; two lovely nieces, Cynthia Greaves of San Diego, and Lee Taylor of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and their children.
She wanted to extend her gratitude and thanks to all of her caregivers, especially Mary Onakpoya, Shannon Coleman and Chris Collins during the last several years.
Friends are cordially invited to share remembrances during a visitation from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 8th of September, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 9th of September, in the library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where the Rev. Hannah Atkins Romero, Rector at Trinity Episcopal Church, will officiate.
Interment will immediately follow, via escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
