Marcus Evans-Montrell, known by his family and close friends as “Pooh,” was born on December 31, 1978, in Shreveport, LA, to Daisy Stewart and Henry Gadsden.
Marcus loved life and people—everyone was his friend. He was raised in Carverdale by the late Deacon James Roberts Sr., who accepted him as his own son.
He became a member of the St. James Missionary Baptist Church family under the leadership of Pastor Melvin Smith. At the age of five, he grew spiritually through Sunday School, the Starlight Band, and Vacation Bible School. He was also a member of the Youth Choir and spent a short time singing with the Male Chorus.
At twelve, he was baptized by Pastor Smith alongside Deacon Roberts. Music was a significant part of his life. At the age of eight, he began playing drums for his grandfather’s quartet group, “The E. Stewart Singers.” He also decided to play the tuba in both middle and high school.
Marcus graduated from Cypress Falls High School in the spring of 1997 and was accepted at Trinity Valley Community College, where he continued to pursue his passion for music by becoming drum major for a glorious semester. In 2019, he joined the Greater Commission Family under the leadership of Dr. Ronnie Matthews Sr. as a skilled drummer, he was able to maintain the tempo and keep the beat while responding to Sis. Brownlow and communicating with Sis. Carreathers.
Marcus was very outspoken and never hesitated to keep a heated argument about the subjects he was the most passionate about like his beloved Dallas Cowboys—he always had to have the last word!
Marcus truly touched the lives of all he encountered. His spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Evans, and Irma Stewart, as well as Jessie and Louise Harris.
Marcus is survived by his two beautiful daughters, Madison Riddick (Kavaughn) of Cypress, TX and Sydni Stewart of Houston, TX; his mother and step-dad, Daisy and Deacon Ronnie James of Katy, TX; one sister, Hadassah Meyers (Brian) of Houston, TX; two brothers, Samuel Mark Roberts and James Edwards Roberts Jr., both of Houston, TX; one aunt, Linda K. Crooks (Van); three uncles, Ralph Stewart, Ben Stewart and Kenneth Stewart; two grandsons, Kamdin and Khiem Riddick; and his beloved companion, Sha’Vone Fowler.
