Rest in Peace. Remembering your sweet smile

My name is Debbie Smith Shaffer and I never knew Margaret.  I am very sorry to have never met her or her husband Bob Smith.  Bob was a 2nd cousin to my dad, Joe Smith.  Bob was born in Oklahoma City in 1922.  Joe was born in Kentucky in 1925 but moved to Oklahoma before starting school.  But, I do not think they ever met or even knew about each other. 

Reading over the comments posted about Margaret and especially the one by daughter Nancy makes me think about family.  We so take them for granted when they are alive, never realizing how much we will  miss them when they are no longer with us.  It is the little things, like sitting at the table, talking  and laughing...

I volunteered with Margaret as a Girl Scout outdoor camp trainer.  She trained until she was almost 80.   At one of our trainings one of the participants was very impressed with Margaret and me how old she was and I told her.  She said, “When I grow old I want to be just like her.”   Once when Margaret and I were at a Trainer’s Retreat sleeping inside a heated room at camp in the dead of winter, she looked over at the window and looked at me as we made our beds.  “It’s okay Margaret, I said, “ I brought my warm pajamas and blanket  because I knew you would want the window open.”  Margaret had a firm believe in God and heaven and I’m sure that’s where she is.  She will be missed.

Mom was my friend. We had so many years of talking, laughing, going to the beach, teaching me to quilt, and most importantly talking about the Lord.
I wasn't close to Mom growing up but when dad was ill he asked me to look after her.  I took it seriously and began to learn who Mom was.  She loved gardening, going for walks, the beach, camping, sewing & quilting, cooking, and laughing to name a few.  She was quick witted and had so many funny things to say if you just took the time to listen.  She had time to listen whenever I called to talk. 
Mom loved her family and friends.  She always said she was blessed to have 5 children, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Mom was always ready to lend a hand when needed and loved being a servant to others. 
Most importantly, Mom loved the Lord. She loved her church, First Baptist Houston where she and Dad (Bob) attended and Dad was a deacon, taught Sunday School, and attended Bible study classes.  She continued till she had to quit driving.  Mom had the assurance that she would spend eternity in Heaven and see Dad again. 
I will miss my Mom not only as my mother, but as my friend.  I am blessed to have the assurance that one day I will be with her and the Lord in eternity. 


Margaret was a special lady and she and I had interaction in the widows group at Houston's First Baptist Church.  She took great pride in her appearance and was fun to be around.
She always had boundless energy and she loved to visit with you.
Her attitude was one of a positive nature and I know she left a legacy of love  to her family.
She will be greatly missed.

Thank you to Margaret for her dedication to Girl Scouts.  And thank you to her family for sharing her with the girls of Houston.

I have known Margaret since around 1966-1967, when we were both active adult Girl Scouts.  I never heard Margaret raise her voice, she always stayed very calm and collected.

Probably my funniest memory of Margaret was one of she and husband, Bob.  We were at the second (I think) council-sponsored Cadette Event in 1967 in East Bernard, Texas.  My co-leader Gayle and I had just finished pitching our tent and were inside putting our gear up .

Along came Margaret and Bob, to pitch Margaret's tent in her assigned space next to us.  They placed the tent in the space and began pitching it.  We could hear everything they said because we were jambed so close together.  Bob was just going to town pitching the tent, when Margaret says, "Bob, I think that should go here."  Bob, you could hear, never slowed down and never said a word.  Then, followed Margaret, "Bob, I think that should go..."  Bob again, never said a word, and never slowed down.  "Bob, I think that should..."  Bob continues, "Bob, I think that.."  Margaret continued as did Bob.  "Bob, I think..."  "Bob, I..."  As Bob hammers the final stake into the ground, Margaret said quietly with a bit of irritation, "Bob..."  We were silently laughing in our tent.  She never raised her voice, and Bob never stopped hammering.  They were a good pair!  

Every time I saw Margaret, she had that same sweet smile on her face!  Rest In Peace, dear lady,!

Margaret loved to train tools in Outdoor training.  When we were asleep in the training center we would feel a breeze.  Margaret had the window open even in  winter.   I will miss her. RIP

I met Margaret during her time as an adult trainer. I was the Training Registrar, I knew her to be a kind and sweet person. Condolences to her family, may she Rest In Peace.

Margaret is survived by her son, J W Smith (Linda); daughters, Elyse Taylor-Thees (John), Barbara McDowell (Greg Sr.), Nancy Reynolds (Mike) and Judi Powell (Steve). She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
