Maria Hortencia Cavazos de Renteria

Maria Hortencia Cavazos de Renteria, age 91, entered into rest on July 21, 2024, in Houston, Texas. She was born October 13, 1932, in Allende, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to the parental union of Porfirio Cavazos Tamez and Felicitas Guerra Rodriguez.

She was the third child of ten siblings, and the eldest daughter. She was affectionately known by most as Tencha but to her immediate family she was Mami or Wela. Tencha was raised in Allende where she attended elementary school and later worked in the family-owned general store. In 1962, Tencha met the love of her life, Ascension Renteria, during a church outing in Sabinas Hidalgo, NL, Mexico. They married in May 1964, in Allende and shortly thereafter immigrated to the United States where they lived in Chicago, Illinois. Tencha and Ascension had three children, Hugo, Porfirio, and Juan who they loved unconditionally. Following the Chicago blizzard of 1979, the family moved to Texas later the same year and made Houston their permanent home. The family also lived in San Antonio from 1987 to 2008. Tencha and Ascension were happily married for 44 years until Ascension’s death in December 2008. Wela Tencha was so loving and kind with a beautiful smile that always lit up the room. She was beloved by everyone who knew her and will be greatly missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Porfirio and Felicitas, her husband Ascension, and six siblings.

She is survived by her three sons, Hugo Renteria and wife, Grace, Porfirio Renteria and wife Ana Luisa, Juan Renteria and wife Debbie; six Grandchildren, Michael (Samantha), Matthew (Celeste), Paloma, Diego, Samuel (Omie), Naomi; five Great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Ethan, Aiden, Olivia, Henry; brother, Ramon Cavazos and sisters, Angelica Maciel and Amparo Leal.

A visitation for Maria will be held Sunday, July 28, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039, followed by a funeral service from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
