Maria Elena "Nena" Sanchez

Maria Elena "Nena" Sanchez, 81, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025. Born on January 23, 1944, in Victoria, Texas, Nena lived a full and vibrant life marked by love, laughter, and joy.

She attended Incarnate Word Academy in Houston and later married the love of her life, Gilbert Salazar, who preceded her in death. Nena had an unmistakable zest for life. She was known for her love of bingo nights, frequent trips to the casino, and a passion for dancing that brought joy to those around her.

Nena is preceded in death by her father Jesus L. Flores, her mother Manuela S. Flores, sister Mary Louise "Lulu" George, brother Guadalupe "Sonny" Cavazos Jr., and sister Francis "Franke" Limon.

Nena is lovingly survived by her daughters: Veronica Salazar and her partner H. Urbina, Blanche Salazar-Goodwin and her spouse Shane Goodwin, and Margarita Salazar Bonner and her spouse Vernon Bonner. She was a proud grandmother to Angela Palacios, Ismael Martinez Jr., Juan Reyes Jr., Sergio Reyes, Bianca Lopez, John Matthew McGinn, and Monica Segura. Her legacy continues through her 9 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and happiness.

She will be remembered for her generous spirit, infectious laughter, and the joy she brought into every room. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is reunited with her beloved Gilbert and other cherished loved ones.

A visitation for Maria will be held Friday, October 17, 2025 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Funeraria Del Angel Crespo, 2516 Navigation Blvd., Houston, TX 77003. A rosary service will occur Friday, October 17, 2025 at 7:30 pm, 2516 Navigation Blvd, Houston, Texas 77003. A vigil service will follow Friday, October 17, 2025 at 8:00 pm.
