Spending the night at nanny and papaw's always meant an extra bit of sugar in the morning cereal, and an afternoon of butter covered fingers that were necessary to prepare our favorite, rice crispy treats. We happily sat with her while she watched her stories flipping through back issues of people magazine. We even got caught up in the westerns she and papaw enjoyed. 

They had a dog named Chaz, a dog whom she pretended to hate. When papaw would open the back door to tend to his garden the dog would always run in the house and when that happened you could always count on a voice coming out of Nanny, a voice reserved only for this occasion, “Out”, she would yell, “get that dog outta here.” Her reaction was always the same and it was always hysterical. I like to think that for a split second she was actually happy to see the dog…just for a second.

We watched Oprah and every news cast throughout the day and even  tuned in to “Sit and be Fit” for the inevitable laughs it would bring us all.  Then papaw would watch what ever game happened to be on and  commence yelling at the TV. Nanny would look at us and roll her eyes with a smile. When she had had enough she would remind him that they couldn't hear him, but that never phased him, and before long we would all get swept up in the game and the yelling would intensify. Those were good times. 

She was the classiest lady you would ever meet, never a hair out of place with only the best taste. My favorite memory of Nanny was on one of the rare occasions it snowed in Houston. My sister and I called Nanny up so excited about the unheard of weather condition. She told us she was on her way and quickly hung up. My sister and I had been in the backyard scraping snowballs together and throwing them at each other, like we had only seen in the movies. Out walks our Nanny, a vision of perfection. Perfect hair and makeup, adorned by a fur coat  that had likely never seen the light of day in the Houston climate. Then shanigans stopped immediately, until Nanny quickly turned around, scraped the snow off the roof of the dog house behind her and showed no mercy in letting us have it. It was game on after that. We probably ruined that coat, but she certainly didn't care.”

Rejoice in the Kingdom of Heaven with all our loved ones who have gone before you!  Thank you for many years of special friendship and love.  Our prayers are for all your lovely family that they will find comfort with God's help during this time of loss.

So sorry for your loss.  I worked with Marie many years ago at American General, and she was one of the first people I got to know.  She was a kind and generous person who loved her family dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

For My Angel…

My Nanny, 

I know you have spread your diamond encrusted wings in the kingdom of Heaven & you are the New Angel.  The past few years have been very difficult not only for you, but all of us who love you.  Knowing that God has always been in control provided faith, hope, & love.  I take comfort in knowing you are no longer suffering & I thank God for that.  You fought so hard & you gave it your all everyday!  

In 88 years you faced & overcame every obstacle, challenge, & hardship with more strength than most could ever handle.  You are my Hero!  They say God will never give you more than you can handle & you are a true testament of the power of always knowing this to be true.  I know you will watch over us & protect us from Heaven.  You are now Our Guardian Angel & I am going to count on you to continue to be there for us.  I promise to always have Faith & Trust in the Lord!  When I am weak I will remember all the things you have taught me & know that if you could do it, so can I!

I will never forget your beautiful smile, your laugh, your adorable sense of humor, & all the special times we shared.  We shopped, we loved, we laughed, we cried, & we grew together.  I Thank God for you!  Nanny, I know you are the most Beautiful Angel in Heaven!  I know you are so happy to be there with your Loves George Marshall & Billy.  

Nanny, you do not have to worry for I know you will guide me with God.  I won't let you down!  We are all better people because you were Ours & you always gave us unconditional LOVE!  I am a better person because of you!  I promise to take care of My Mom for you & all of My Family the best that I can.

Make sure you do lots of shopping, laugh a lot, & tell everyone we love in Heaven hi!  Surely there is Foleys in Heaven!  I know you will find it!

I love you always & forever!  I will miss you Angel!
