Marilyn was a long time employee for HISD as a secretary. When her husband John became ill, she retired.
In the later years of her life, she lovingly helped care for her great grandchildren while they were young and then eventually her great-great grandchildren at her home. The memories made throughout this chapter of her life will always be treasured.
Marilyn leaves behind a legacy that is entwined with selflessness and unconditional love. Her love was a special kind of love. She was kind to everyone she met and had a way of making you feel instantly like family, welcomed and warm. She was a true servant and testament of God’s selflessness who humbly cared for others her entire life. Her family and friends were the most important aspect of her life and she was continuously nurturing those relationships in her many forms of adoration; a homemade meal, a card in the mail, a phone call, or a lunch date. Marilyn’s love for cooking, good company, and her family is what is most remarkable about her almost 100 years. Her homemade pie’s were a staple at every gathering throughout the years and something so many will remember her by. Marilyn’s lively, gentle, and authentic spirit will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son, John M. Duty Jr. and her daughter-in-law Florence Duty: her daughter, Sherry Duty Lea and her son-in-law James Lea; and her daughter, Patti Lynne Duty; her grandchildren, John Duty III and his wife Cherie Duty, Brett Lea and his wife Maisie Lea; Christy Clapp and her husband Mark D. Clapp; Jarett Duty and his wife Leila Duty; her great-grandchildren, Ashlea Clapp Armstrong and her husband Tyler Armstrong, Amber Clapp Mehaffey and her husband Brandon Mehaffey, Ally Clapp, John Duty IV, Braden Duty, Alan Duty, Avery Duty, and James Tatum ‘J.T.’ Lea; her great-great-grandchildren, Emmy Armstrong, Noah Armstrong, and Grey Mehaffey, along with nieces, nephews, family and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of forty years, John M. Duty, her parents, and her older brother, Edgar Spradley Jr.
