Martha Jane McElroy was a member of Crestview Baptist Church in Midland, Wilton Baptist Church in Wilton, Connecticut and Second Baptist Church in Houston. She was born in Valentine and grew up in West Texas. She was the granddaughter of a Texas Ranger. In her Christian walk, she touched many lives with her love and caring spirit. First and foremost she loved being surrounded by her family. Cooking, visiting with them and caring was her ministry. Her family drew strength from her unwavering commitment to our Lord and her enjoyment of life and people. In her youth she played basketball and loved horseback riding and dancing. At church she was active in the Women’s Missionary Union and Vacation Bible School. In later years she enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren, oil painting and Bible study.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John H. McElroy and son, William “Bill” McElroy; her parents William Fred and Julia Garlick; her sisters Lucille Henderson, Cecelia Elliot, Jimmie Lou Garlick and Evelyn Enriquez; her brothers Fred Garlick , Van Garlick, Henry Garlick and Lee Roy Garlick . Survivors include her son and daughter- in- law, Ted and Susan McElroy; daughter and son- in- law, Sharon and Steven Mayo and daughter-in-law, Judy McElroy; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Shannon McElroy, Kim and Brandt Moffat and their daughter Hanna, Michelle and Eric Larson and their children, Brittany and Mitchell, Missy and Shane Marvin and their children Grant and Kate, Natalie and Danny Blazei and their daughters Sadie and Charlotte, Ally and David Saxe and their children Micah, Laurel and Norah, Heather Mayo, Patrick Mayo and Daniel Mayo. She is also survived by her sister, Ida Mae Beasley and her husband Robert, and brothers, Marvin Garlick and his wife Dixie, and James Garlick and his wife Gina. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive her as well.
We will always remember that twinkle in her eye, her smile, her energy, her love for the Lord, life, family and friends, her generosity and her fabulous sopapillas. In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions in Martha's honor to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
