Mary Catherine was a lifelong Houstonian, born on October 19, 1936. She grew up in West University and graduated from Lamar High School in 1954. She attended Rice University, where she met her future husband, Gus, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. While Gus was in medical school, she taught algebra at The Kinkaid School.
Mary had many passions throughout her life. While raising her four children, she was both a fierce tennis player and an avid bird watcher. She loved visiting High Island and other sites to see beautiful birds and was always delighted by the arrival of hummingbirds or the nesting of Carolina wrens in her yard. Mary continued playing tennis for most of her life—well into her later years, she was the captain of her Friday indoor tennis team at Club Westside and loved cheering her team on each week.
Once her children were grown, Mary took up golf and bridge. She was always competitively spirited—in the best way—and maintained a sharp, curious mind throughout her life, right up to the end.
A lifelong Presbyterian, Mary’s faith in Jesus carried her through life. Her faith reflected her character: practical, steady, and full of grace. She lived by showing others the love of Christ through kindness, joy, and steadfastness—without ever needing to say a word.
Her family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Caregivers for providing her with love, care, and dignity during her final days.
In remembrance of Mary Catherine, and in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Pines Presbyterian Church, the Houston Audubon Society, or the Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation.
A memorial service/ celebration of life with reception will be held on Friday, March 27th, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Pines Presbyterian Church, 12751 Kimberley Ln Houston, TX 77024.
